Brrrrr you can certainly feel a nip in the air, can’t you? The leaves are turning and all the conkers on our local tree have fallen and been promptly snaffled by my kids and the local squirrels. It’s time to prepare…

Yes, ‘tis the seaon of puddles, big piles of leaves and possibly, if it’s anything like the last few years, a good few dumpings of pure, crisp, white snow which quickly turns to grey slush and then worse – ice – eek!

I’ve learnt the hard way in the past. If you leave buying kids’ wellies and warm, cosy boots until it’s flooding or near Arctic conditions you’ll be hard-pressed to find a pair – let alone in the right size and colour. If you want to get ahead of the Jones’ (and why not, they’re always so blinking perfect) take a look at Brantano’s boot range.

Wellies

Every kid needs a pair of Wellingtons, £10. Where would we be without the boot that is both practical, affordable yet strangely trendy? From splashing in puddles, jumping in the mud to pottering around the garden –  good old Wellies are the perfect footwear choice for your little darlings. When puddles start icing over and trips to the park involve having to wriggle toes to warm them up you could try slipping in some nice thick, Welly socks or even some of those warming heat pads.

Boots

However, when the snow and ice comes little feet need to be kept toasty, dry and supported. They’ll need some help by way of some super grippy soles (do your kids always look at the grips on shoes first too?)  as well as support around their ankles.

For boys I’m really liking the look of the Hi Tec Equinox Mid wp Snowboot (£35). Not only do they look ‘the business’ in terms of being robust and grippy they also don’t have any fiddly laces – always a great time saver when it takes hours to get all those hats, scarves and gloves on. Instead of tying laces these boots use a nifty hook-and-loop closure system which helps to give a snug fit. Oh, and I can’t help wondering how long it will take Noah to tell everyone that they are the same ones that spacemen wear?

Meanwhile Ferne, ever the fashionista at age 5, will definitely love the Osaga Himalaya Snowboot . As well as doing all the practical stuff like keeping her feet warm and dry and keeping her upright when she’s chasing after her brother with hands full of snow they also happen to be pretty, darn cute. What’s not to love? The pom-poms and the fake fur trim really are divine. In fact, I’m off to see if they do them for grownups… (the answer is ‘yes’ – in black!)
