You might have guessed by now that I’m getting into holiday mode. Last week I blogged about the best beach bags and the week before about bikinis and swimsuits. With packing nearly complete I’m turning my attention to holiday reading.

Reading

The kids are still too young to be able to sit poolside book in hand whilst they splash around in the pool so reading takes place either at night time or on the odd occasion that there’s time to oneself.

For me there’s no point in reading something ‘too heavy’ or ‘wordy’ over the summer hols – yup, it’s got to be an easy read by which I mean it has to capture me by page 1 and have me turning the pages quicker than you can say ‘cocktails are ready’.

I’ll give you an example of the standard we’re talking. Last Summer I read Stieg Larsson’s ‘Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ trilogy. I just couldn’t put them down – to the point where I was having to sneak off to read a few pages on the sly.

This Summer, now Kindled-up, I can load up with a ton of books and not worry about lugging them around. So I wanted to hear your recommendations.

So far I’ve got Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shade Freed – I must admit I’m getting a bit bored of the repeated phrases and vocabulary now. Dare I say it but even the sex is getting a bit yawny but I am interested in reading to the end of this erotic fairy-tale.

When the smut is out of the way I’m moving from erotic to humour. I’ve downloaded Love From Both Sides by Nick Spalding. It’s based on real-life tales of dating disaster and relationship blunders which I am assured (as a happily married woman) I’ll find hilarious. OMG I’m a smug married!

So funny is this novel it’s been tagged as a ‘warts-and-all romantic comedy for everyone who knows how tricky (and occasionally ridiculous) the quest for love can be’. I’m in two minds with this one as usually anything labelled as ’a laugh out loud romantic comedy’ is not funny at all. However, I do like the idea of being really annoying and stopping everyone from reading their own books as I quote aloud.

On top of that I’ve also snaffled up The Curiosity Cabinet by Catherine Czerkawska   which was shortlisted for a literary prize in 2005 and is now only available on Kindle. A quick squizz on Amazon and it has plenty of 5* reviews – good enough for me.

The story revolves around a woman’s return to the Hebridean island of Garve where she reconnects with her childhood playmate. It promises some love, a kidnapping and dark secrets – oh and top of that Lorraine Kelly gave it the thumb’s up, describing it as:  ’Heartwarming, realistic and page turning’. Wowsers.

So, I’m in need of about 2 more books (I’ve got 6 weeks of reading to do!) Please let me know your recommendations and then perhaps we can tweet about them in a holiday reading hashtaggy type book club thang?

  1. That film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo really upset me – gave me nightmares and still gives me flashbacks. I didn’t see all the warnings before the film so was quite disturbed. It was very good, but much too violent for me. I hope your holiday reading is far, far, more pleasant X
