Ta da! Time for my first toy/prodcut review. Wanting to buy our four-year-old something with some staying power, we stumbled upon the vtech Kidizoom Plus camera. Six-months on and it has been put through its paces by both Ferne, her older brother and any unsuspecting victims who stand still long enough to get caught on camera…

Why a camera? Our kids, in particular Ferne, always love playing with our digital camera so when I saw the vtech Kidizoom plus it seemed like a great present solution. I was slightly concerned that the buttons for switching between modes would be too tricky for a four-year-old but she grasped how to use it within minutes. Typically, within an hour, it was the parent who was being given a demonstration on how to use it!

What can it do? As well as normal photo-taking functions, the camera also records videos but the real joy for Ferne is that you can distort faces and put borders around the photos so it looks, for example, like the person/victim is swimming with fish, is behind bars or being eaten by a monster.

Anything else? There are four games on there too, so if children get bored of distorting your face they can play these instead. The camera also comes with a lead so you can download photos and hook-up to the TV. Great for letting kids see their photos and videos on the ‘big screen’.

What do the kids make of it? Ferne says: ‘I love playing the games and taking videos, especially when we say bum.’

What does Mum make of it? Mummy says: ‘It has proved a great buy – it’s used regularly and often

fought over (ok, not great news for parents but proof that it’s popular!) As well as taking real photos there are plenty of other features to keep them occupied and interested. Some of the videos they take are hilarious. They usually involve saying poo or bum but, hey, what’s new?’

To sum up: So far, six months down the line, the camera is still working despite being manhandled. The wrist strap has been used but it has taken and survived a couple of drops on the floor. For extra ‘cushioning’ and ease I also purchased a carry case. There is a VTech one but I found a non-branded one which was cheaper.

Extra info: Needs 4 x AA batteries (we’ve use rechargeable ones and are not having to recharge too often). Also comes in blue.

Due to the success of the vtech Kidizoom Plus V-Tech have just brought out an updated version of this camera (above). The Kidizoom Twist has a stronger zoom (x4), can store more pictures and features 5 games, voice changing effects and a self-timer.

  1. Got this camera as a present for my 3-year-old daughter – she loves it! She can switch it on and off by herself and is always asking for ‘[her] camera’ so she can snap a picture. It’s also absorbed a few harsh drops without any trouble.

    Caveats:
    - Though it’s named “Kidizoom”, it does not actually have any zoom functionality. (Not that a toddler…
