It’s our wedding anniversary today – the perfect excuse to reflect on 9 happy married years and the ones that came before saying ‘I do’ such as when we traveled to Paris by train.

Relationship on track: our first ‘mini break’ to Paris

It was a cold November in 1998 when a very cool Mr H whisked me away to Paris for the kind of romantic weekend Bridget Jones only dreams of. It’s fair to say the love birds were chirping pretty much as soon as we boarded the Eurostar. We snuggled back, cracked open a bottle of wine and watched city turn to country and then back again as we arrived at Gare du Nord (with a short ‘le tunnel’ interlude).

Of course, train travel isn’t only for romance it is for adventure, culture and personal enhancement and Planet Rail, a family run train travel company, knows about every type of rail break going and has something to suit every type of traveler.

If, for example, you’re the luxury-loving, sky (or in this case rail) is the limit type you could take a trip on the Venice Simplon-Orient Express. Those who want to explore a city with a fine tooth comb could take a professional, guided tour. And why stop at one city or country when you could travel all of Europe and beyond?

The great thing about rail holidays in Europe is that your sight-seeing doesn’t end when you’re travelling and importantly rail travel is also environmentally a great choice as it emits 10 times less CO2 than travelling to that destination by plane.

  1. Ooo, the Glacier Express is on my list of must-dos before we move back. I’ve heard it’s amazing.

    • I know Rachel, it looks amazing, doesn’t it? I’d probably leave that trip until winter (then there’s an excuse to cosy up and you could wear your white wardrobe as worn by Cameron Diaz in The Holiday! ha ha). I actually watched that a little while back and thought of you x
