You may have already come to the conclusion that there is more to the weight-loss picture than picking the latest diet plan and getting to the gym. What happens if you are feeling uninspired, unmotivated or generally stuck in a rut weight-wise?

Success in most things in life comes from knowing what you want to achieve and planning how you are going to get there, so applying some business style strategy to your weight loss ambitions is a good move. Firstly set your goal and make it SMART (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely). So for example, rather than saying ‘I want to lose a few pounds, it would be nice if I could get back into my ‘skinny’ jeans’, applying SMART principles you might instead say: ‘I’m going to lose 10lbs before the end of November so that I can comfortably fit into my size 12 jeans again on Christmas Day’. This approach should ignite the kind of motivation that you may have been lacking, as you will know in your mind exactly what you are aiming to do and also that it is doable and not some vague or difficult goal.

Accountability is also important for getting to where you want to be, so make sure you share that SMART objective with others, so that you know it’s out there as an intention. Enlisting a friend to join you or joining a group either in person or online can be a great way to help you stay on track and in control.

Maybe the really big question for you is what diet do you follow? The first thing to realise is that there is no one diet that will work for everyone; we are all biologically unique and while your friend might be melting away before your eyes on the latest craze, it might not work for you. The best advice is to keep things simple and one of the best dietary principles to bear in mind is the importance of balancing blood sugar levels.

Ensuring that each meal and snack will give you sustained energy levels is the best way to avoid cravings and crashing energy levels that leave you reaching for the biscuit tin. Eating regular small meals and snacks which include a good balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat is the basic strategy. For example, adding some ground seeds to your porridge or cereal in the morning should help you to feel satisfied for longer as the protein, fat and fibre in the seeds will slow down the energy release. If you are snacking on an apple, then adding a few almonds will make it a more satisfying snack as the protein and fat content of the almonds will mean the fruit sugars will take longer to have an impact on your bloodstream.

One final bit of advice is to practice mindful eating, meaning don’t eat on the run or in front of the computer or TV. Making sure that you sit down to eat meals and engaging with what you eat should help to avoid mindless overeating and bring about a shift of mindset around food.
