It’s back! Yes, my 5 minutes:5 stories feature in which I  deliver news about anything that takes my fancy is back. This week I get the knives out, give the medicine cabinet a check-up and check-out H&M’s collaboration with Maison Martin Margiela…

Sharpen up your cooking skills…

CeraKook Ceramic knives on mummy rates it

Any Chef will tell you that the first rule of cook club is to use good knives. It’s just a shame for us day-to-day cooks that really great knives usually come at a really huge cost. I’m told, however, that CeraKook Ceramic Knives offer the quality of professional knives but an affordable price. Made of zirconia, second only in hardness to diamond, the knives can cut and slice fruits and vegetables as well as meat and fish without bones and offer 10 times the durability of steel knives. At the moment the knives are only available to pre-order with a delivery of late November but the good news is if you order now you can get up to 20% off. Visit the CeraKook site to see all the knives and take advantage of the pre-order discount.

Make something of those special moments

I bet on your list of things you ‘must do’ but never get round to is downloading pics and videos of your kids from your iPhone or Android. Right? One Mum, however, has done it and not only that she’s made a business out of it! Jodie, from Reel Life Productions creates keep-sake ‘highlights videos’ from your phone images and vids that are available on DVD and online. All you need to do is send her your pics and footage (many options of how you do this) and she will edit and create something special that you can keep and share with others. What a great idea!

Check-up for your medicine cabinet

Is your medicine cabinet fit and ready to deal with minor injuries? According to a survey, undertaken to mark Self Care Week, 90% of GPs thought patients had a poorly stocked medicine cabinet which prevented them from treating ailments and injuries at home. But what should we have in our medicine cabinet? Here is a list of essentials, compiled by GPs:

  • A healthcare guide
  • First-aid kit including guidebook, plasters, bandages, thermometer, eyewash solution, medical tape, tweezers, sterile dressing, antiseptic lotion/cream
  • Painkillers – ibuprofen, paracetamol, aspirin
  • Cold and flu remedies
  •  Anti-diarrhoea medicine
  • Antihistamines
  •  Oral rehydration salts
  • Indigestion remedies
  •  Sunscreen

I’m going to add the missing bits to this week’s shopping list…

Collaborate and demonstrate

There’s been quite a hoo-ha about H&M’s latest collaboration with Maison Martin Margiela which goes on sale tomorrow (15th November) from 9am. I know this first hand as on Monday I was shopping in town with my mother-in-law and we literally got caught up in the hype. There we were merrily making our way along Oxford Street when we suddenly found ourselves in the middle of what looked like a protest/demo complete with people dressed in black carrying boards (and wearing pinnies). It turned out they were simply telling the world about the collection but it certainly got our attention and led us to looking into the H&M window and ‘oooohing’ over some of the designs. Just one of the drop-dead gorgeous pieces by the Belgian designer is this long, draped (not as plungey as it looks as there is some material at the top) figure-hugging dress an absolute steal at £59.99. It just shouts ‘Christmas Party!’ to me.

Bags of style

I have a friend, who will remain nameless, who insists on using a carrier bag to carry things his possessions around in. Every now and then is fine but he uses a carrier all the time, even to work – and he’s a lawyer! He is not penniless and has style but refuses to buy a decent bag – I just don’t get it! This year I’ve told him to please put a lovely leather bag on his Christmas list or I’ll do it for him. If you are also in the same situation and are finding men’s leather bags tricky to track down take a look at Alfred Dunhill. They have a gorgeous selection which are classy and classic meaning they won’t date and will last longer than a plastic one. Hoorah to that.
